Description
These CBN inserts are aimed at finishing and semi-finishing hardened steel, cast iron, and other ferrous wear materials. They are often chosen when carbide loses size control too quickly in hard machining.
Edge preparation, nose radius, insert geometry, and grade direction can be selected around the workpiece hardness, cut pattern, and finish target used on site.
CBN Inserts for Hardened Steel and Cast Iron
CBN inserts are commonly reviewed for hard turning, hardened steel, cast iron, and abrasive ferrous material applications where ordinary carbide wears too quickly or cannot hold stable cutting conditions.
For hardened steel, CBN inserts are usually considered when the workpiece is already heat-treated and the process needs stable hard turning instead of, or before, grinding. For cast iron, CBN can be useful when the operation is abrasive, high-volume, or difficult for carbide to maintain consistently.
CBN is not a universal insert choice. Heavy interruption, weak clamping, unstable machines, or unsuitable edge preparation can cause chipping. HEYI reviews whether the operation is continuous, light interrupted, or heavy interrupted, and whether the target is roughing, semi-finishing, or finishing.
- Hardened steel: check hardness, interruption, edge preparation, and surface target.
- Hard cast iron: check cast type, scale, interrupted cut, and cutting speed.
- Bearing or gear components: check rigidity, tool holder, insert grade, and nose radius.
For RFQ review, send material grade, hardness, operation type, current insert, cutting speed, feed, depth of cut, interruption level, surface requirement, tool holder, machine rigidity, coolant condition, and photos of tool wear or part defects.
