Description
PCD reamers are used for finish machining of aluminium-alloy bores when diameter, roundness, cylindricity and surface condition must be controlled. The design should be matched to the pre-hole, stock allowance, bore geometry and machine alignment.
Where is a PCD reamer commonly reviewed?
- Motor housings, covers and other aluminium-alloy housings
- Bearing bores and other fitted-hole features
- Steering, transmission and precision-machinery components
- Through bores, blind bores and interrupted bores after the feature is reviewed
What determines the reamer design?
- Aluminium alloy, casting condition and abrasive inclusions
- Pre-hole diameter, stock allowance and alignment with the tool axis
- Final diameter, tolerance, roundness, cylindricity and surface requirement
- Through or blind bore, interruptions, cross-holes and available chip space
- Machine, holder, runout, coolant delivery and current cutting data
Process boundary: a reamer cannot reliably compensate for a seriously misaligned pre-hole, unstable workholding or excessive runout. PCD is also not the default choice for hardened ferrous workpieces; CBN or carbide may be more appropriate after review.
Factory preparation and inspection
The factory route can include slotting or flute generation, edge preparation, precision grinding, diameter and geometry inspection, magnified edge inspection, and a review for repair or reconditioning. The exact route depends on the bore and tool construction.
Questions buyers usually ask
What stock allowance should be left for reaming?
There is no universal value. Bore diameter, alloy, tool design, pre-hole quality and the required result all affect the suitable allowance.
Can one PCD reamer cover both blind and through bores?
Not automatically. Chip evacuation, lead geometry, coolant direction and the available space at the bore bottom can require different designs.
What information is needed for a reamer RFQ?
Please provide the bore drawing, alloy, pre-hole size, stock allowance, tolerance and surface requirements, bore type, cross-holes, machine and holder details, coolant condition and current cutting data.
