Description

PCD ball nose tools are considered for three-dimensional contouring and finishing applications where the workpiece material, tool radius, effective reach and machine condition all affect the result. HEYI reviews each request from the drawing and machining data rather than treating one geometry or cutting condition as suitable for every job.

Where this tool fits

  • Three-dimensional contour finishing, fillets and curved surfaces
  • Suitable non-ferrous, graphite and abrasive-material applications
  • Jobs where ball radius, reach, clearance and edge condition must be reviewed together
  • Drawing-based tools for a defined workpiece and machining route

Material-selection boundary

PCD is generally reviewed for suitable non-ferrous and abrasive workpieces. It is not the default choice for hardened ferrous mold steel. For hardened steel or another ferrous material, send the material grade and hardness so HEYI can assess whether a CBN tool, carbide tool or another route is more appropriate.

Geometry and process review

A useful ball-nose-tool review should include the required ball radius, cutting diameter, effective length, neck clearance and shank or holder interface. Machine spindle condition, toolholding, runout, toolpath, coolant strategy and workpiece access can all influence the achievable surface. A requested surface target therefore needs to be assessed together with the complete setup.

What to send for RFQ

  • Part drawing or 3D model and the surface to be machined
  • Workpiece material, grade and hardness when applicable
  • Ball radius, diameter, effective reach, neck clearance and shank requirement
  • Machine, holder, spindle and coolant or dry-cutting information
  • Surface-finish and tolerance targets, current tool and current problem
  • Required quantity and expected application timing

Use Full RFQ to upload the drawing and machining information, or start with Contact Us when only preliminary data is available.

Questions before selecting a PCD ball nose tool

Is PCD the default choice for hardened mold steel?

No. PCD is normally assessed for suitable non-ferrous and abrasive materials. Hardened ferrous materials may require CBN, carbide or another tool material after the grade, hardness and process are reviewed.

Can HEYI review a custom ball nose tool from a drawing?

Yes. Send the drawing or model together with the material, radius, reach, shank or holder requirement and machine conditions. The tool geometry can then be reviewed against the actual application.

Does the tool alone determine the final surface finish?

No. Surface finish also depends on the workpiece material, tool geometry, runout, toolpath, machine stability and cutting conditions. Include the required finish and current measured result in the RFQ so the complete process can be reviewed.
